February 4 marks World Cancer Day, a global awareness event that takes place each year. The goal of WCD is not only to bring more attention and understanding to the disease that everyone has been impacted by in one way or another, but also to unite the world population’s fight against it.
Photographer Tim Smith’s series Cancer Normal is an intimate look at one family’s relationship with cancer: both Cheryl Mauthe and her 8-year old son Colin were diagnosed within two years of one another. While Smith’s photos certainly capture the struggle for “normalcy” that many cancer patients experience each day, they also shed light on the immeasurable amount of hope and perseverance that Cheryl and her family possess.
