Hosted by Abbi Jacobson, A Piece of Work is a new podcast that covers “everything you wanted to know about modern and contemporary art but were afraid to ask.”

Produced by WYNC and the Museum of Modern Art, A Piece of Work is a ten-episode podcast series inspired by the questions asked at MoMA about what art actually is. Aimed at breaking down the mystery and exclusivity surrounding modern and contemporary art, it covers art movements from abstract expressionism to pop art to minimalism.

Each episode, Jacobson invites guests onto the show to have a casual conversation about different artists, their materials, processes, and ideas behind the works. With a changing roster of curators, conservators, art educators and big-name celebrities like RuPaul, A Piece of Work

The debut episode features another comedian, Hannibal Burress, “because having a conversation about artwork with him is so fun,” Jacobson says. Following episodes explore a range of art-related topics. Are emojis art? Jacobson asks Questlove, who has tweeted about the colorful icons. What place do they have in the art world? Do they belong in a museum? Jacobson invites curator Paola Antonelli to talk about MoMA acquiring the original emoji set, opening up a conversation about web-based art. What would Andy Warhol have created with the internet and social media? Jacobson ponders this with Tavi Gevinson of Rookie Magazine.

As an artist herself, Jacobson understands how the art world can often feel strange and intimidating. Instead of using dense theory and academic terms to talk about artwork, she keeps things cool, clear, and casual. This means that A Piece Of Work is not only ideal for those who are new to the art world, but also for artists to learn how to talk about their own work using everyday language.

A Piece of Work runs from July 10 to August 9, 2017, with new episodes released every Monday and Wednesday on WNYC’s website, MoMA’s website, and Apple Podcasts.
