For her project 24 Bands, graphic designer Lisa Lok looked to her music library for inspiration. She’d challenged herself to use the number 24 as the basis for a project, and the result was a list of 24 bands that have been important to her over the years. Lok created minimal visual representations of each one, sometimes with very punny results.
With music selections that range from current (Frank Ocean) to classic (Queen, The Beatles) to 1990s/2000s nostalgia (Death Cab for Cutie, My Chemical Romance), Lok’s 24 Bands is a visual diary of one designer’s evolving musical taste. It’s also a kind of snapshot of shared cultural history for those who were kids at the start of the new millennium.
Brooklyn-based Lok’s love of music is evident in much of her graphic design work, which includes spreads for publications like Rolling Stone as well as music festival branding.
