Format Picks is our monthly contest series. Launched in February 2018, it’s an open call for creative work of all kinds, always free to enter. At the beginning of every month, we’ll announce a new theme for you to interpret.
So far, we’ve asked our community to create work inspired by the color red and to submit their best autoportraits. The results have been stunning.
April’s contest theme
This month, the theme for Format Picks is the city.
As winter finally ends and spring starts to properly begin, we’re getting ready to end our hibernation. It feels like the right time to be at the park, walking down the street in the sun, bicycling to work instead of taking the bus, sitting on patios again. With this feeling in mind, we decided on urban space as the theme for April’s Format Picks.
Images of the city could be street photography, or architecture shots, or a sketch of people riding the subway. You could submit a poster for a community event, or a design inspired by skyscrapers, or a collage made of torn-up newspaper photos. Your work could also depict an imagined city rather than a real one.
We’re looking forward to seeing submissions inspired by cities that aren’t necessarily New York, Paris, or London, but smaller, lesser-known locales. We’re also looking forward to seeing images that depict the hidden corners of well-known cities, or depict them from a new perspective.
Ce qu'il faut soumettre
You can submit work in the form of photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, GIF, digital illustration, or any other visual medium you choose. Entry is limited to one image per person.
Images should preferably be a minimum of 1200 pixels wide and 72 dpi resolution. JPG or PNG files are best. Please include your first and last name in the file name of your submission.
Your submission should also include a brief statement on how your work relates to the theme of the city, and what city in particular in shown in the image you’ve submitted.
Le prix
This month, we’ll select one Format Picks winner who will receive a $250 USD award. The winner will also be featured in a Format Magazine article highlighting their work. There will also be one Audience Choice winner chosen by votes from the community. This winner will also receive a $250 USD award and be featured in Format Magazine.

Once your art is submitted, it will appear in the entry gallery here, where the community will be able to vote on their favorite entries. The entry with the most votes will win the Audience Choice prize, so be sure to check back during the month of April to cast your vote for your favorite work.
You can toggle between viewing the most popular submissions and the latest submissions in the gallery below, so remember to have a look at the latest images before casting your vote. Voting will close at 6:00 pm EDT on May 1st. You can vote for as many entries as you like.
