FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises designed to help you move better, build strength in your core area, improve flexibility and help with mental wellbeing. There are many Pilates models but all focus on concentration, control, centre, flow, precision and breathing. There are many benefits to Pilates which give an overall sense of wellbeing.

Who is Pilates for?

Pilates is for EVERYONE! It doesn't matter if you are male or female. It doesn't matter if you have no experience or if you are very experienced. It doesn't matter if you have limitations in your movement or you are super flexible. It doesn't matter if you haven't exercised for years or you workout regularly. It doesn't matter what shape or size you are, we are all unique and all have a shape. Pilates will always help someone.

I've been in pain with my back for years and I'm nervous, should I still come?

Yes you should still come. We are very experienced and have helped many people over the last 10 years. Many people are in pain and put off starting Pilates. But this can often makes the situation worse. Pilates caters for all levels of ability and our classes are small deliberately so we can see you and you can see us. If you are in pain often we do recommend having some 1:1 session before taking a class, as this will give you a personalised programme for your own specific needs. A lot of GP's and movement therapists recommend Pilates nowadays. Please just ensure you are given the all clear to partake in exercise by your medical practitioner.

What are the benefits of having 1:1 private sessions?

You get personal attention to your own needs, so we can tailor the session to suit you and your own body. You get the teachers attention for the whole hour. If you are injured we can guide you, Please respect your body and where it is at today. Learning the method correctly you will improve at your own pace. You also get on going support should you require it, which can include access to online videos to continue your practice at home safe in the knowledge you are doing the exercises correctly.

What is Pilates Matwork?

Pilates on the Mat uses a system of exercises designed to build strength and stability using precise movement. The challenge comes from gravity and body weight. We also use small pieces of equipment to add fun, variety or challenge.

Can 'Mat Class Packs' be used for any class?

Yes Mat class packs can be used for any Matwork class on the timetable (excluding the community classes). With our flexible online booking system you can choose your preferred class each week. If you are just starting out then we do advise you to avoid any Level 2 classes as these are more advanced. Please note the community classes in Ackworth operate using their own ‘class pack’ system.

What is the Pilates Reformer

The Reformer is a Pilates machine using spring resistance and ropes. The springs can either add challenge or support depending on the clients needs. You will find the equipment can help you to get into positions easier than on the mat. The ropes can support you allowing you to stretch and challenge your body further whilst feeling safe and secure on the carriage.

What is the Pilates equipment

The Pilates equipment incorporates the Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector and Arc Barrel. This is the comprehensive system of Pilates which was taught originally by Joseph Pilates. The equipment helps to support the body and aid movement in a way which could not be achieved solely on the mat. The equipment can be experienced in either group classes or on a private basis.

Why do you ask about my medical history?

You'd be amazed how an old seemingly insignificant injury from school when you played hockey and sprained that ankle can be affecting things many years later! If we know about old injuries we can consider it when assessing you.

What should I bring and wear to my session?

Just bring yourself in some comfortable clothing you can move freely in. We provide all mats and equipment in our studio space. For the Ackworth community classes we do ask that people bring their own Mat.
